Today I write this post in honour of a blogger friend, Laumika, who loves the African fashion, and I understand why! Now it´s your turn!.

A fashion brand that I´ve discovered recently (And that I regret having taken a long time for that ´cause I love it!!) is SUNO; a newyorker brand designed by Mark Osterweis,a film director and screenwriter turned designer, and made from recycled African textiles from Kenya, one-of-a-kind pieces made from vintage brightly coloured kangas, that he has been collecting along his life in Kenya, where his mother had buikt a house on Lamu Island. Wanting to do something positive for Kenya after the country found itself in political turmoil in 2008, Max decided to put his collection of fabrics to new use. These fabrics are large rectangles of printed cotton taht women from the coast of East Africa hve worn since the mid 1800s. They are sold in identical pairs and usually have Swahili phrases about social and sexual politics and written on them. Like works of art, these kangas are often passed on from mothers to their daughters.

There are not two identical pieces, and silk is used to add contrast to the gauzy cotton kangas. Slight flaws in the fabric give the designs character, and each piece of fabric was carefully selected by Suno designer Max Osterweis for its quality, condition, and feel.

That´s how SUNO started, a company that employs local Kenyan talent and is committed to treating workers fairly. The aim is to affect positive and lasting economic and social change. For taht, the designs for the SUNO collection originates in New York City, where sample and pattern makers construct the first pieces for the collection. The patterns and samples are then sent to Kenya, where the garments are produced in small artisan workshops.
